What is Ashwagandha exactly?
Before you buy Ashwagandha, we want to briefly inform you about the medicinal plant itself. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), also known as Indian ginseng, is an herb used in traditional Indian medicine, Ayurveda. In Sanskrit, ashva means "horse" and gandha means "scent". Various parts of the plant are used, but the most common supplemental form is an extract from the roots. Its root has a horse-like scent and is said to impart the strength and potency of a horse.
How does Ashwagandha actually work?
Ashwagandha is considered an adaptogen, which means that taking it is supposed to increase the body's resistance to stress. Studies on rodents and cell cultures suggest that Ashwagandha offers a broad spectrum of health benefits. There it is shown, amongst other things, that Ashwagandha capsules can modulate signal transmission through GABA receptors. As the most important inhibitory neurotransmitter, GABA thereby influences stress perception and sleep.
Ashwagandha preparations are primarily known for their anxiolytic (anxiety-relieving) and stress-reducing effects. It also seems to lower cortisol levels, which has been verified in several human studies (RCTs) (Lopresti et al. 2019, Chandrasekhar et al. 2012, Gopukumar et al. 2021). Furthermore, there is increasing evidence for the effectiveness of Ashwagandha in improving total sleep time and sleep quality in humans (see sources below).
Ashwagandha contains numerous bioactive compounds, including alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, steroids and steroidal lactones. Steroidal lactones also include withanolides, which are thought to be responsible for most of the plant's postulated effects.
Why buy KSM-66® Ashwagandha?
The following arguments speak in favour of KSM-66...
- It is the most highly concentrated, best bioavailable full-spectrum Ashwagandha product on today's market, as it preserves all natural constituents of the herb in their original balance.
- It is the Ashwagandha root extract with the most extensive range of research studies and clinical trials.
- The extract has the highest percentage of withanolides of all branded extracts available today that are derived solely from the root. It has a concentration of more than 5% withanolides, measured via HPLC.
- The manufacturer is the only Ashwagandha producer in the world with its own farms, production facilities, test laboratories, research centre and distribution.
- KSM-66 is the herbal supplement with the highest number of certifications (GMP certificates, 100% USDA Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, Gluten Free per GFCO, BSCG-drug free, Kosher, Halal, HACCP and several others).
- The Ashwagandha root extract contains negligible amounts of withaferin A, a widely recognised cytotoxic withanolide.
- KSM-66 is produced through a unique extraction process based on the principles of "Green Chemistry" and uses neither alcohol nor other synthetic solvents.
- The supplement is GRAS-certified, vegetarian, safe and shelf-stable.
Clinical Studies on Ashwagandha Extract
A relevant selection:
1. A prospective, randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled study of safety and efficacy of a high-concentration full-spectrum extract of Ashwagandha root in reducing stress and anxiety in adults. Chandrasekhar, K., Kapoor, J., & Anishetty, S. (2012). Indian journal of psychological medicine, 34(3), 255.
The treatment group that received the high-concentration full-spectrum Ashwagandha root extract showed a significant reduction in values on all stress assessment scales compared to the placebo group. Serum cortisol values were significantly reduced.
2. Efficacy and Safety of Ashwagandha ( Withania somnifera) Root Extract in Insomnia and Anxiety: A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study. Langade, D., Kanchi, S., Salve, J., Debnath, K., & Ambegaokar, D (2019). Cureus, 11(9), e5797.
Ashwagandha root extract is well tolerated and can improve sleep quality and sleep onset latency in patients with insomnia at a dose of 300 mg extract twice daily.
3. Clinical evaluation of the pharmacological impact of ashwagandha root extract on sleep in healthy volunteers and insomnia patients: A double-blind, randomized, parallel group, placebo-controlled study. Langade, D., Thakare, V., Kanchi, S., & Kelgane, S. (2020). Journal of Ethnopharmacology: 264:113276.
This study confirms that Ashwagandha root extract can improve sleep quality and help in the treatment of insomnia. Ashwagandha root extract was well tolerated by all participants, regardless of their health status and age.
